Phonics and Early Reading

At Broadhembury school we use Bug Club as our chosen scheme to teach systematic synthetic phonics. This provides a structured program to help the children with their learning of phonics and early reading.
In Reception, Children learn phonics phases 2 to 4 through daily four-part sessions, engaging through songs and games.
In Year 1, Children continue their daily phonics, embedding their previous knowledge and learning phase 5 phonics.
Children have a statutory Phonics Screening Check in the Summer term of Year 1.

All you need to know about phonics:

Correct pronunciation and actions for sounds:
Reading at home in KS1:
Children will bring home two books weekly; their phonics book and their library book.

Phonics book:
Children will read their book initially in school with a teacher. This book then comes home for the children to share and read to you at least a further 3 times to build fluency and comprehension. This book will have a little bug on the front cover, and a first page that will help with the learned sounds, words for sounding and blending practise and tricky words (non-decodable words) as seen below.
Library book:
This is a book the children have chosen from the library to read at their leisure. They are not expected to read this book to you, but rather to share with yourselves and enjoy being read to. These are great books for discussing and learning new vocabulary from. The title of their chosen books will be recorded in their reading record.Â
